The IFR Asia China ECM Roundtable takes place as an in-person event in Hong Kong on the morning of Tuesday May 30, 2023.
Most Chinese ECM activity stuck to the A-share market last year, but Hong Kong could see a greater share of the action if investors can look past global macroeconomic concerns.
China’s reopening has spurred economic activity and could reignite ECM activity after a lacklustre 2022. The Hong Kong exchange has made it easier for technology-focused companies to list there, while Alibaba’s proposed break-up could also generate new IPOs.
On the mainland, changes to rules and regulations have given companies more flexibility to set price ranges and conduct bookbuilding for their IPOs. Jumbo deals during the pandemic showed that the A-share market has a deep enough investor base to comfortably absorb multi-billion-dollar deals, but international interest in sector leaders is also growing.
The biggest barriers to offshore listings appear to have been lifted, after China and the US reached agreement on audit inspections last year. That clears the way for Chinese companies to list in the US, but only if they are confident that tensions between the two countries will not pose further problems. Regulatory requirements have been finalised after a period of uncertainty for some industry sectors, and some will need to undergo screening before they will be allowed to list offshore. Chinese issuers are also expected to continue heading to Europe to sell GDRs, broadening their funding avenues and giving them added flexibility.
Our panel of experts will discuss these and other burning questions at a roundtable to be held in Hong Kong, moderated by Asia Equities Editor Fiona Lau.
