New insights into social events are emerging from analysis of images of news and social media sentiment. In this talk Dr. Richard Peterson describes how media analytics are providing new insights into the origins and tops of speculative bubbles via vivid visualizations and quantitative research. Examples from price bubbles including equities, cryptocurrencies, housing, and many others will be explored. Recent mathematical models of bubbles will be augmented with visualizations and sentiment analysis. Attendees will leave with tools for identifying and successfully navigating speculative manias and panics.
Dr. Richard Peterson is CEO of MarketPsych Data, a firm producing media sentiment data in partnership with Refinitiv. Called "Wall Street's Top Psychiatrist" (Associated Press), Dr. Peterson's financial psychology research has been published in leading academic journals, textbooks, and profiled in the financial media including NPR, CNBC, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and the BBC. His book, "Inside the Investor's Brain" (Wiley, 2007), was praised as "outstanding" and a "seminal text" by Barrons. With Frank Murtha PhD he co-authored "MarketPsych" (Wiley, 2010). Both books were named top financial books of their respective years by Kiplinger's. His new book "Trading on Sentiment" was published in March 2016 is available in Chinese and Japanese. Dr. Peterson earned cum laude degrees in electrical engineering, arts, and medicine (MD) from the University of Texas, performed post-graduate neuroeconomics research at Stanford University, and is Board-certified in psychiatry.
